The 80/20 Principle

In his profession as a professional photographer, Rich lives by rule that he calls the 80/20 principle. This means that he tries to put 20% of his time as a photographer into giving back through his time and skills.

Rich was approached by two other local photographers in 2007 to help start what has now become a flourishing photowalking group, with over 600 members and regular outings where photographers of all skill levels get together and share both their passion and their knowledge with each other. The sense of community that has grown out of the efforts of a few local photographers is nothing short of remarkable, and highlights the value and satisfaction to be found in friendship with like-minded individuals.

In 2008, Rich began teaching free mini photography clinics a the local city library, providing a forum for photographers of all skill levels to learn more about specific applications of photography. These, too, have grown in popularity as the local photography community has expanded.

But perhaps more important than these activities is Rich’s desire for people to know about his efforts, not to blow his own horn, but to encourage others to live the same principle and use their talents to give back, regardless of what field those talents are in. With modern technology and the way it allows people to connect, it’s never been easier to bring people together in a community.

He explains “I firmly believe in the principle that ‘he who refreshes others, will himself be refreshed’. I know that when helping others and stepping away from my work photography, I return feeling rejuvenated and more inspired in my daily work.” Rich illustrates that he loses nothing by giving– he ultimately gains more than he gives by dedicating that portion of time to serving.
